A Bed of Carnations/Wild Carnations

(Summer of Genji’s 36th year)

On a hot summer day Genji is enjoying a picnic with some young friends of Yūgiri and begins to joke about Tō-no-Chūjō in front of Chūjō’s son, Kōbai. Genji has heard of the search for long-lost daughters and heard rumors that one very countrified lady was found at Ōmi. Genji, by the way, is somewhat upset with Tō-no-Chūjō for frustrating Yūgiri’s suit of Lady Kumoi.

Looking in on Tamakazura, he thinks about revealing her identity to Tō-no-Chūjō. Genji has not had much success with her and realizes any success he might have would only be damaging to her future. But as he sits with her and they begin to discuss the Japanese koto, she starts to soften to him. He begins to tutor her on the instrument, and his resolve to send her away is broken.

Meanwhile, Tō-no-Chūjō is trying to decide what to do about his new-found daughter, the lady from Ōmi. She is embarrassingly inelegant with a particularly loud and unsettling voice. He decides to send her to court with his other daughter, Lady Chūjō of the Kokiden apartments.

The carnations of the title are used to refer to Tamakazura and the lady from Ōmi as stray flowers picked out of their rustic circumstances.
